Camp Eagle 2019

Camp Eagle 2019 is in full swing! There has been a great turn out of students so far. A big thank you to all the parents and guardians for allowing your children to participate. Camp Eagle is being held at Larsen Elementary and runs until June 27th. Summer School is held Monday through Thursday, and starts daily at 8:00 am and ends at 12:00 pm.

This year summer school started out with huge giveway from Rose Quintana and the Running Strong Organization. Many families received running shoes, dental hygiene kits, and soap. Thank you, Running Strong and Rose for the wonderful gifts. 

Agriculture with Taylor Eddie- Our own Taylor Eddie is teaching the student about agriculture, entrepreneurship, and how to care for farm animals. Taylor has been stressing the importance of being self-sufficient by growing one's own produce and raising livestock. Taylor has shared her own cultural experience of helping her paternal grandfather on the Navajo Reservation on his farm. To learn more about Taylor Eddie's grant please click here.

English with Analysa Allison- students are brushing up on their reading and writing skills. Every day all the students read a book before they attend classes. The younger students have an older buddy help them read a new book each day. Student read for about 20 minutes each morning. Students have been introduced to several different books written by indigenous authors. The books chosen have taught students about American Indian all over the United States. Students are strongly encouraged to tell their own cultural story through writing, drawing, and even music. Students have been writing poems for the River of Words Poetry Contest as well. We are so proud of these students for making an effort to read during the summer. 

Math with Shoshana Begay- Students have been learning how to weave. Students have learned how to use plants and herbs to dye their own yard. They have been learning basic geometry during their weaving projects. Along with that, they will be writing their own cookbooks filled with indigenous recipes. Students have been working hard on a service project for Adopt A Native Elder

P.E. with Alfredo Quintana- Each day our students get a full 40 minutes of playing outdoors games.

Preschool with Betty Tanner and Teacher Assistant Barbara Allison- Students ages 3 to 4 attend preschool daily. They have several hands-on activities to introduce them to counting, the alphabet, nursery rhymes, and of course physical activity of playing outside for these little ones to get their wiggles out.

Early morning dance classes with Alfredo Quintana, Trent Singer, Matthew Thompson, and Chelsea Thompson- Students spend about an hour learning grass, hoop, jingle, and fancy. Dance class starts right at 8:00 am.

Special Guest for the first week of Summer School is Jen Gardner, who is a master gardener. She has taught the student a lot about caring for plants. She has been bringing in examples of plants and explaining the importance of agriculture in our lives. She even has given the students their own plants to care for and grow at their homes.
